Things to see & do in Aberdyfi
Just a few recommendations of things for you to see and do whilst staying at Tegfan cottage in Aberdyfi.
Beach lovers
4 miles of clean sand perfect for picnics or just a gentle stroll. Plenty of seabirds to spot and if you are lucky the occasional seal and porpoise.
Harbour & Jetty
Perfect spot for watching the boats and many other water-based activities – even a spot of crab fishing if you fancy it. A visit to Dai’s Shed is a must for a fresh seafood treat, also the Sweet Shop for one of their homemade ice creams, both located on the harbour.
Wildlife
Birds, seals, otters, porpoise are just a few of the varied wildlife Aberdyfi has to offer. A visit to the Ynylas Nature Reserve, host of BBC’s Springwatch on a couple of occasions is always a good day out.
along with the Dyfi Osrey Project in Machynlleth https://www.dyfiospreyproject.com/
Walking
There are just far too many to list from the ones around the village to further afield. Maybe pop into the Tourist Information Centre on the Jetty or alternatively have a look at the Ordnance Survey map for the area which is the OS Explorer 1:25K – OL23 Cadair Idris and Llyn Tegid. Also available to download.
Cycling
The areas around Bryncrug, Bird Rock and the Dysynni Valley are particularly enjoyable. Also there are several off-road cycle routes such as the Morfa Mawddach (with George III pub en-route) and the Forest Enterprise Visitor Centre at Coed-y-Brenin which has routes across the mountain and through the forest.
Cycle hire is available from close to Tywyn (Dysynni Cycle Hire or Bird Rock Cycle Hire).
Golf
Aberdovey Golf Club is a championship 18-hole, par 71 links course situated between Aberdovey beach and the Cambrian Mountains.
There are other golf courses nearby including: Borth and Ynyslas Golf Club (18-hole championship course), Machynlleth Golf Club (9-hole heathland course) and Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech (18-hole championship course).
Watersports
There is access to sailing, wind surfing, kite surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding in and around the Yacht Club and Harbour Masters Office.
Other activities
Bowls, tennis and croquet all available to do on the doorstep.
Wining & Dining
There are plenty of choices for dining in Aberdyfi. Some of our favourites for dining out are listed below.
Coast Deli and Dining offers breakfast, morning coffee, lunch and evening meals including tapas on some evenings. Also “Coast…to go” offer a lovely range of takeaways including picnics.
The Penhelig Arms offer a selection of good ‘pub food’ with stunning views across the estuary.
The Sea Breeze offers a pleasant relaxed restaurant with estuary views, as well as takeaway dishes and fresh fish to buy and cook yourself.
The Bengal Balti for a curry. They do not have a drinks license so if you fancy, take a drink across with you from the Britannia pub next door or simply just take your own.
Aberdyfi also offers more informal food choices including Walkers Fish and Chips, The Sandwich Shop and Medina Café (a tucked-away sun-trap courtyard café for lunch). The Fridge and The Sweet Shop both offer award-winning ice cream and chocolaty treats!
It is also fun to catch the train or drive to Tywyn where you will find several independent eateries and food shops. Tywyn Food offering among other things fresh crab and lobster and Oliver’s bakery is also a must, located at the top end of town by the cinema it sells gorgeous bread and extremely delicious cakes and pastries.
Drinking
The Penhelig Arms is a traditional pub with an outside area with a spectacular view and a cosy bar with log burner.
The Dovey Inn is a bigger hotel and pub, popular with sports fans because of their big screen TV’s.
The Britannia is an independent pub with a restaurant upstairs. Most football/rugby matches are shown here.
Tides Inn is our newest bar, stylishly decorated with a city feel offering a selection of drinks with table service.
Day Trips
If you fancy trips a little futher out, visits to Tywyn, Fairbourne, Barmouth and Harlech to the North and Machynlleth, Borth, Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, New Quay and Llangrannog to the South and West to name but a few are all easily done in a day. All offer lots of different things to see and do.
